Daily Blog #6 – Glasgow, Scotland

It’s the last day of the year, and there’s less than four hours til midnight, so I’m gonna be brief here and spell out a few things I liked out this place. The more detailed observations will come later. (I’ve got four more days in the country.)

The Scottish accent is… amazing. It is hilarious. It seems so bizarre and so comically exaggerated, that to be here, in the trenches, hearing it in all directions, is a treat in itself. There is a heavy usage of the OOO sound, like they throw that in to places to accentuate. Like, instead of beautiful, it would be be-YOOOO-tee-fahl.

Glasgow is a nice looking city. It’s similar to Granada, Spain, where I live now, in that it doesn’t feel large or small; you have everything you could possibly want—bars, historical sites and shit—but you can walk anywhere. There is a nice kind of Gothic/Victorian architecture you see all around the center, and it gives it that real feeling of “Scottishness.”

Today was my one full day in the city, as I’ll be leaving for the capital tomorrow, and I utilized my day by… visiting a necropolis. What’s a necropolis? Well, in video games, it’s usually where you battle zombies and ghouls and shit. In real-life, as far as I can tell, it is a place they buried very rich people about 200 years ago. There are these massive headstones and crypts, all lined up in an orderly fashion, with nice wide grassy knolls between them. From here, I had a nice vantage point of the city, and I will post pictures later if I can remember.

New Years in Scotland has a fancy name here: Hogmanay. It’s a massive party, and most people go to Edinburgh to celebrate, but I’ll go tomorrow, on the first, because apparently the party spills over until the 2nd. I found some little art-space student-collective thing called Exit having a few DJ’s here in Glasgow, and it’s 15 pounds (affordable), and I feel like whatever. New Year’s is a pretty overrated holiday in my opinion, anywho. The whole “trying to find someone to make out with at midnight” thing is… ugh. I dunno.

I’m just happy to be here in Scotland. And either I’ll find adventure, or it’ll find me.

Next time we talk, it’ll be 2024.

Have a happy new year, everyone.

As always:

Get drunk, and make bad decisions.
